The Shelley High School Russets are going into the 2020 season with a blank slate.
The team struggled in the 2019 fall season, going 0-5 in conference play and 0-8 throughout the season.
The team comes in with second-year Head Coach Josh Wells, who joined the program when former head coach Jake Monahan resigned after a successful run that saw three consecutive playoff seasons.
The Bingham County Chronicle reports the Russets are in the search for a new starting quarterback this season. The team lost several starters to graduation after the 2019 season.
While the team is still working to solidify who is starting under center for the Russets, Shelley High School returns a strong class of linemen to help boost both the offense and the defense, according to the Chronicle.
The team’s 2019 season schedule was tough to begin with, but only got tougher throughout the year. The Russets faced 3A State Champs Sugar-Salem in the second game of the year, where they lost 40-0, and ended with a 33-16 loss to 4A state championship runner-up Blackfoot.
The Russets will have a shot at redemption in both matchups as the team develops under Wells, facing off against Sugar-Salem again as the second game of the year and Blackfoot toward the end of the season.
