Week One Observations
A collection of thoughts and observations on high school football games this past weekend. And I want to hear YOUR thoughts too.

Another week of high school football is in the books. It's called "Week One", but that's really an improper title, since "Zero Week" was really "Week One".

Regardless of what number is associated with the title, this is for sure: there were TONS of great games this weekend. My only hope is that this week's games are even better.

In addition to the games I write about, comment below with your thoughts and observations of games you have watched or attended.

Pocatello vs. Rigby: New season. New coach. New attitude. Rigby moved to 2-0 on the season with a 19-12 win against the Indians at Holt Arena. The Trojans have now equaled their win total from the past three seasons... and it only took them two games to do it. Defense has been the staple for Rigby thus far and it will need to continue to be that way as the offense develops. The Trojans can move to 3-0 this week with a win against an improving Preston team.

Bonneville vs. Idaho Falls: Last season, Bonneville hammered Idaho Falls 76-32 at Ravsten Stadium. This year, with a new head coach and a new offense, Idaho Falls completed the comeback with just under 10 seconds to go to win 44-41. These aren't the Tigers of the past few years. This Idaho Falls team looks and feels different. I do wonder what will happen when they get into a defensive struggle, on a night when the offense isn't clicking. Will they be able to stop their opponent? They beat a good Bonneville team on Friday, but allowed 41 points. Last week they allowed 35 points to Blackfoot. Only time will tell.

Sugar-Salem vs. Firth: This game was your classic "Three yards and a cloud of dust" game. Rain certainly made this game a lot more interesting, with six combined fumbles in the fourth quarter, five of them coming in the last five minutes. The Diggers were led by Jordan Godby and Teancum Gibson, who combined for all but 15 yards of offense... and it was all on the ground. Firth had the lead for most of the game, with Jackson Thompson and Connor Montgomery leading the way. In the end, the game came down to 2-point conversions: The Diggers converted more than the Cougars did. Sugar now has a chance to go 3-0 as this week they face the team that ended their season last year, the Snake River Panthers.

Skyline vs. Blackfoot: The Grizzlies edged the Broncos 47-41 in double overtime at Ravsten Stadium. Skyline had a rough first half before regaining their composure and battling touchdown for touchdown with Blackfoot. The feeling around Blackfoot was that this season was going to be different... but I don't think they meant different as in an 0-2 start. The Broncos have also given up 40 and 47 points on defense through the first two games. That cannot be a pleasing stat for Coach Stan Buck. Skyline has similar issues on defense that will need to be resolved quickly, especially as they have a date with Century this week.

Century vs. Highland: Can we PLEASE have round two of this matchup again? Say... this week maybe? What a great game this was at Holt Arena! The Diamondbacks had Highland on the ropes before Tommy Jewell and Co. were able to find the endzone with seconds remaining in a 27-23 win. I think that Century has put the 4A High Country Conference on notice that they will be in the mix for a playoff berth this year... possibly the top spot. With Bonneville as the other front-runner in the conference, the Oct. 18 matchup of the Bees and Diamondbacks becomes a must-see.

Now, it's time for YOU to add in your thoughts on different games from the previous week! Just post in the comment box below!
